Technical Guide Outlines IRI’s Approach to Preventing Violent Extremism

September 16, 2020

Nearly twenty years after the September 11 attacks, the nature and threat of terrorism has evolved across the globe, with approaches adapting to incorporate both kinetic responses and preventative interventions. According to the U.S. Government Stabilization Assistance Review (SAR) and the United States Institute of Peace Task Force on Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) in Fragile States, fighting terrorism requires a joint hard and soft power response.

In keeping with this approach, the International Republican Institute (IRI) has released a summary of its “Preventing Violent Extremism” technical guide, which outlines the Institute’s approach to countering violent extremism and offers direction for other democracy, rights and governance (DRG) implementers. Our four-step approach focuses on analyzing the nature of violent extremism; ensuring an evidence-based response; providing local stakeholders with critical tools; and adapting PVE programming to evolving political, social and economic contexts.
