Abuja, Nigeria − IRI, in partnership with the Nigeria’s House of Representatives Committee on Millennium Development Goals (MDG), today premiered the documentary “Dreams for Nigeria.” The film highlights both the challenges and achievements of seven female members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, and the role they play in their country’s political, social and economic development.
The documentary follows the legislators as they meet with constituents and discuss their goals for the future of Nigeria. Highlighting education and better access to healthcare as necessary tasks, these women hope to be models to Nigeria’s youth and present a diverse and unified Nigeria where everyday dreams are attainable.
The representatives highlighted in the documentary include: Hon. Binta Garba Masi, Adamawa State; Hon. Saudatu Sani, Kaduna State; Hon. Titi Akindahunsi, Ekiti State; Hon. Maimuna Adaji, Kwara State; Hon. Florence Akinwale, Ekiti State; Hon. Nimota Oba Suleiman, Kwara State; Hon. Beni Lar, Plateau State.
The premier for “Dreams for Nigeria” was held at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja. Filming, editing and production of the documentary was conducted by McNally Temple and Associates of Sacramento, California.
“Dreams for Nigeria” is a part of IRI’s work in Nigeria which focuses on increasing the participation of underrepresented groups in the political process, specifically women. IRI worked closely with the House Committee on MDG, Advocacy Nigeria and the Office of the Senior Advisor to the President on MDG.
MDG stems from the September 2000 United Nations meeting, where member states developed and united behind eight development goals to be achieved by 2015. The third development goal was specifically set to promote gender equality and empower women, particularly as it relates to women’s political participation.
