Washington, DC – IRI issued the following statement on the announcement that the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet will be awarded the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize.  The Quartet is comprised of the Tunisian General Labor Union; the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts; the Tunisian Human Rights League; and the Tunisian Order of Lawyers.

“The Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet played a pivotal role in establishing and mediating the country’s National Dialogue process in 2013 and their efforts were critical in preventing the country from further political crisis and avoiding potential violence.

“As a result of their efforts, Tunisia saw a negotiated peaceful transfer of power, the passage of the region’s most progressive constitution and successful national elections in 2014.  At a time when Tunisia’s democratic transition was in peril, the Quartet demonstrated remarkable determination and skill in ensuring a peaceful resolution to what had been a rapidly deteriorating political crisis.

“Their work was not accomplished alone.  Without the participation of political parties, a peaceful resolution to the political crisis in 2013 may not have been possible.  Today, IRI celebrates this victory for democracy with all of its partners in Tunisia and looks forward to continuing to provide assistance in the country’s democratic transition.”
