Bogotá, Colombia – As Colombia grapples with the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 1.8 million Venezuelan migrants and thousands of Colombians returning from Venezuela are uniquely at risk. COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting marginalized areas with many migrants and returnees unaware of health services available to them. Likewise, data on those infected among such groups may be inaccurate.
To facilitate migrant access to COVID-19 treatment, the International Republican Institute (IRI) has commissioned a short animated video that explains Colombia’s laws and health programs that extend medical benefits to both irregular and legalized migrants.
IRI is committed to addressing forced migration by strengthening democratic governance across the globe. Our programming aims to mitigate tensions over scarce resources and enhance long- term strategic planning in response to migration inflows in places like Colombia and Uganda. This video is part of a pilot project that seeks to improve capacity of local officials in understanding and responding to migration impacting Colombia.
